Barcelona set to give Chelsea clear path to sign £55m France international

Barcelona appears to have given up in the race to sign Sevilla defender Jules Conde.

According to a recent report by prominent transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Catalan giants are not ready to match Chelsea’s £55m bid.

Not only that, but Todd Boelly’s decision to give the French defender a whopping £8.5m (€10m) salary may not be something Xavi Barcelona can rival.

If Sevilla agree to allow Conde to move to Stamford Bridge, the 23-year-old will become Thomas Tuchel’s third signing of the summer after Raheem Sterling joined from Man City, and Kalidou Koulibaly arrived from Napoli.

Blues fans will keep everything until their club can finally strike a deal with their Spanish rivals. After Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger lost at the end of the season after both defenders failed to extend their contracts, the 2020-21 Champions League winners are sorely short of centre-back options.

Kounde will prove a versatile add-on. The French player can not only play as a central defender as part of a four or five defence, but he can also play as a full-back and this could be invaluable if Cesar Azpilicueta leaves before the start of next season.
