Manchester United have learned how much they will have to pay to get Evan Toni.
After Ole Watkins left for Aston Villa during the late summer transfer window in 2020, Brentford requested new legs to replace a man who scored 25 goals in 46 matches in the tournament.
The player the bees settled on was Evan Toni, who they signed from League One Peterborough.
Tony scored 26 times in the first league during the previous season, an impressive comeback.
But few were likely to have expected the 25-year-old to be as prolific as he proved in the tournament.
Across 45 matches in the English second tier, Tony has found the net on 31 occasions, as well as providing 10 assists. He also scored two goals out of every three as Bees won the play-off matches.
This was followed by a killer slayer who had a very strong first-tier campaign the last time.
He scored 12 goals and assisted five goals in 33 games for Brentford in the relegation fight.
So, when Manchester United were recently linked with the striker, Red Devils fans may have been somewhat happy.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided a status update. Not all news is positive, as United have yet to bid for Toni and face competition for the Newcastle striker:
“Despite what I’ve read, Manchester United have not made any proposals for Evan Toni yet,” Romano revealed.
Newcastle have made contact in recent weeks but there are still no advanced negotiations. Brentford wants at least £40-45m to sell Toni and the situation could evolve in the coming weeks.”
